Who We Are

April Hammerand
Project Manager
april@indyfoodfarmfamily.org

317.417.8449

April Hammerand grew up in a rural village in Northern Illinois and she has been active in the local food movement since 2005. April studied International, Resource Economics and Natural Resource Management at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where she joined a student organization, Just. Food, dedicated to organizing a student-run farm on campus and sourcing local food for the university dining halls. After graduating from UIUC in 2007, she worked with Irv and Shelly’s Fresh Picks, a local organic home delivery business servicing Chicago and the neighboring suburbs. In August 2008, April traveled to Uppsala, Sweden to join an international Masters program in Environmental Communications and Management at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Her master’s thesis focused on the perspectives and lifestyles of farmers involved in a farmers’ market organization in Sweden, in order to help them reflect upon how they could improve their organization in the future. You can read her Masters Thesis “The meaning-making of Bondens egen Marknad, a farmers market organization” online at http://www.essays.se/essay/9442d0da61/

Wielding her passions for good food, healthy ecosystems, and thriving economies, she hopes to help create a sustainable community in Indy that can be used as a catalyst for change in the USA. April lives in the small community of Rocky Ripple along the canal path. She enjoys sighting blue herons, raccoons, and other lively creatures living in her neighborhood.
